Guitar

Using a pick accentuates the higher harmonics in contrast to plucking with the finger

Harmonics

When a guitarist hits a harmonic, what they are doing is dampening out all the odd-numbered harmonic components of the string's vibration, including the fundamental. Since the 1st harmonic overtone is an octave higher than its fundamental, our ears perceive the sound as an octave higher.

Crossing the Border

Starting on the low E, each successive string is a 4th apart until we get to the B string, which is a 3rd apart from the preceding G.

Picture a border in the space between the G and B strings. Whenever we come across any shape that crosses this border, we must sharpen any notes that land on the B or E strings.
