Vocals
Posture
- During inhalation - The lateral expansion (ribs out, chest wide) creates space for your lungs to fill efficiently from the bottom up, rather than just lifting your chest. Here, we are leaning into the lateral expansion (the sides of our chest)
- During singing - You maintain that expanded rib position while engaging the solar plexus area to control the airflow out. Think of it like keeping a balloon expanded while controlling how fast air comes out of it. Here, we are leaning into the solar plexus (below the sternum)
Aspects
- Breath support
- Pitch accuracy and stability
- Tone consistency
- Smooth register transitions
Breath Support
- If we're singing with an inconsistent column of air, then we'll find the voice getting away from us near the end of our sustained vocal. This happens when we start off with good muscle engagement, but then we're letting it go later on
- open vowels like "ahh" use more air than more constricted vowels like "oo" or "ee". As a result, it is more difficult to manage the air control with open vowels.
Exercises
- Arpeggios with single vowel ("we", "you")/random words
- "S" sound over arpeggio
