Derailleur adjustment

Note: if bike has front derailleur, shift to gear 2

  1. tighten barrel adjuster all the way
  2. go to highest gear
  3. tighten the H limit screw until it's too much, which will be manifested in excessive chain noise when pedaling
  4. back off the H limit screw 1/4 turn at a time until the excessive chain noise is gone.
  5. now that the H limit is set, turn the barrel adjuster counter-clockwise a couple of times
  6. go to highest gear and lower gear by 1. If no shift took place, give barrel adjuster 1 full turn clockwise. repeat until shift is successful
  7. go to second highest gear, and turn barrel adjuster counterclockwise, purposefully too far. Little by litte, tighten barrel adjust clockwise to move the derailleur arm outwards. Use the excessive chain again as an indicator for positioning. Once the excessive chain noise has abated, then the positioning is good.
  8. Check the rest of the gears (all except the lowest gear). If there is any excessive noise along the way, give the barell adjuster 1/4 clockwise turn
  9. go to second lowest gear
  10. shift down to lowest gear. If there is no excessive chain noise, tighten the L limit screw. Repeat this until there is chain noise
  11. loosen the L limit screw by 1/4 turn and check to see if there is excessive chain noise on the shift from second lowest to lowest gear. repeat until there is no excessive noise.

Barrel adjusters

Turning clockwise moves the shifting positions collectively outward

If the shift is slow when gearing up, give the adjuster 1/4 turn clockwise
